The term nutraceutical is derived from the combination of the word nutrition and pharmaceutical and is oft en used in the literature. However, its definition lies in a grey area between food, food supplement and pharmaceutical. Stephen DeFelice coined the term and described it as ‘a food (or part of a food) that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of a disease’ (DeFelice, 1995).
