Injuries and surgical incisions in animals necessitate prompt and efficient healing to minimise stress and reduce the risk of infection. While human medicine offers advanced wound care therapies, their high costs often render them impractical for veterinary applications. This disparity highlights the need for affordable, yet effective solutions tailored to the unique requirements of veterinary patients.
Nitric oxide: a natural facilitator of healing
Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring molecule integral to various physiological processes, including wound healing. Its functions include:
These multifaceted functions position nitric oxide as a pivotal agent in the body's natural wound-healing cascade.
Scientific validation of Noxsano's approach
The following studies have confirmed the efficacy of nitric oxide-releasing wound dressings in promoting faster healing and reducing infection risks:
These findings reinforce Noxsano's claim that their Restore wound pads and gels optimise healing conditions and improve clinical outcomes.
Noxsano's innovative approach
Recognising the therapeutic potential of nitric oxide, Noxsano developed a cost-effective method to deliver nitric oxide directly to the wound site. By using sodium nitrite, a common and inexpensive compound, Noxsano's products generate nitric oxide on activation with water. This on-demand production ensures a sustained release of biologically relevant levels of nitric oxide over several days, optimising the wound healing environment.
Available products
Restore wound pads
These non-adherent pads are designed for extended use, up to 7 days, reducing the frequency of dressing changes. They conform easily to various wound shapes and sizes and contain hydrocolloidal components to manage exudate effectively.
Restore wound gel
Ideal for large wounds or areas with high mobility where secure bandaging is challenging, this hydrogel can be applied directly to the wound bed, maintaining a moist environment conducive to healing (Figure 1).

Case study
A compelling case study by Dr Mandy Wallace (University of Georgia; Noxsano, 2024) highlights the efficacy of Restore wound pads in treating a complex, antibioticresistant wound in a 5-year-old English Bulldog (Figure 2). The dog's initial wound, likely caused by a dog attack, was closed surgically but dehisced as a result of infection with resistant Escherichia coli and owner noncompliance. Upon transitioning to Restore wound pads, the infection cleared within three applications, and healthy granulation tissue formed. Remarkably, no additional antibiotics were required post-treatment. The wound was successfully closed, and within two weeks, the patient had recovered fully.

Clinical and practical benefits
Noxsano's Restore products offer several advantages over traditional wound dressings:
Conclusions
Noxsano's Restore Wound Pads and Gels represent a significant advancement in veterinary wound care, offering an affordable, effective and practical solution to enhance healing outcomes. By leveraging the natural properties of nitric oxide, these products provide veterinary professionals with innovative tools to improve patient care and recovery times.
